El Portal del Yunque 2020 Regenerative Retrofit: Regenerating Resilience Through Sustainable Design

Devastated by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017, the El Portal del Yunque Visitor’s Center emerged from its transformation as a model for harmonious coexistence between people and nature. The project’s ambitious goal was to restore the Visitor’s Center, regenerate the flora and fauna of the surrounding forest, and create an immersive experience celebrating the relationship between humanity and the natural world.
The Interlink / MARVEL design-build team, in collaboration with PIERI Architects, employed a multi-disciplinary approach anchored by a USDA Forest Service visioning workshop. This early collaboration established a foundation for ecological and energy-conscious strategies, culminating in the achievement of LEED v4 Gold Certification.
The reimagined Visitor’s Center prioritizes environmental stewardship and visitor engagement. Key sustainable features include EISA 438-compliant rainwater management, endemic flora restoration, and an interpretive trail that reconnects visitors to El Yunque’s unique ecosystem. Advanced design elements, such as 3000 K IESNA Zone 0 exterior lighting, prevent the negative effects of light pollution on endemic nocturnal fauna, while a hybrid natural-mechanical ventilation system enhances thermal comfort for visitors and staff.
A meticulous analysis of the original structure allowed the team to reuse 80% of the building, significantly reducing the construction activities carbon footprint of the renovation. By integrating innovative technologies and sustainable principles, the Visitor’s Center also serves as an educational tool, inspiring future generations to value and protect the environment.
In recognition of its outstanding design and environmental impact, the project received the 2023 American Institute of Architects Honor Award for Sustainable Work.

VA Heroes Domiciliary – Hato Rey, PR

The new U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Heroes Domiciliary – Mental Health and Recovery Facility is a 69,500-square-foot complex located on a 3.98-acre urban infill site at Muñoz Rivera Avenue and Avenida Central, San Juan. Designed to support both inpatient and outpatient care. The facility includes:
- Inpatient Wing: 40 individual rooms totaling 24,000 square feet.
- Administrative Levels: Two floors encompassing 16,000 square feet.
- Outpatient Wing: A two-level, 29,500-square-foot space housing a dining hall, meeting areas, classrooms, and back-of-house facilities, centered around a 6,600-square-foot landscaped courtyard.
- Healing Garden: Adjacent to the dining hall, the garden offers a tranquil space for recreation and contemplation.
PIERI Architects participated as the energy and environmental design consultant in this project, teaming from the project's inception with SCF Architects, the designers and architects of record, and the project's MEP, Landscape designer, and commissioning agent, to visualize, identify, and integrate thoughtful and practical energy and environmental design strategies into the project design documents.
The project aligns with the VA’s sustainability policies and the site and building are designed to comply with PRECC 2018, GSA, and VA energy and environmental standards.
During construction PIERI Architects followed-thru, to provide guidance and support to BIRD Group, Las Brisas Property Management, and the Commissioning Agents to enable them to execute the energy and environmental design requirements during construction.
The resulting team effort enabled the project to achieve a Green Globes – NC rating of 2 Globes.

- Compliance with EISA 438 standards for managing 95th-percentile stormwater using bio-swales, and permeable parking area pavement.
- High albedo roof membrane, hardscape, landscape, and premeable parking aid in reducing the site's Heat-Island signature.
- Dark Sky-compliant exterior light fixtures minimize light pollution.
Water Efficiency:
- Native and adaptive landscaping, and a programmable landscape irrigation system.
- 35% potable water use reduction using Water-Sense and Energy Star Rated Fixtures and Equipment.
- Sub-metered water systems track water use.
Energy Performance:
- 32% less energy consumption compared to ASHRAE baseline model. Sub-metered energy systems track energy use.
- Comprehensive building systems and envelope commissioning.
Materials and Resources:

Indoor Environmental Quality:

Camuy Municipal Dog Park

PIERI Architects designed the Camuy Dog Park as a vibrant community space that serves as both a gateway to the city and a catalyst for pedestrian connectivity.
This project exemplifies our commitment to integrating thoughtful design with community needs, creating a small yet impactful park that enhances the urban experience.
Project Highlights:
• Community Nexus: The park is strategically positioned to act as a central hub, fostering interaction and connection among residents and visitors alike.
• Gateway to the City: Serving as a welcoming threshold, the park establishes a sense of arrival, linking surrounding neighborhoods with urban amenities.
• Complete Streets Integration: The design incorporates complete streets principles, ensuring safe, accessible pathways for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles, seamlessly connecting the park to the broader city fabric.
• Elegant Enclosure: The park features a trellis structure made of curved Cor-Ten steel columns, planted with bougainvillea. This design creates a lush, vibrant boundary between the park's interior and exterior spaces.
• Tailored Dog Recreation Areas: Two separate dog recreation zones cater to small and large dogs, each with its own entrance to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all pets and their owners.
Through close collaboration with the client, and project team, we developed a design that balances aesthetics, functionality, and community engagement. The Camuy Dog Park demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform a underutilized urban space into a cherished community asset.

Rendezvous Park at Busch Stadium, Saint Louis

Rendezvous Park was a visionary concept, born from a deep connection to St. Louis’ storied baseball history and the creative minds of my brother and me. To help pitch the idea to the City of St. Louis, we contacted Paul Hampel, a journalist for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Though it remained an unbuilt concept, the design stands as a testament to the power of architectural storytelling, melding the echoes of a lost stadium with the promise of a renewed urban fabric.
The story began with Old Busch Stadium, a beloved but aging icon that was built in a blighted part of downtown St. Louis that for decades never really improved. Its replacement, a new stadium built to usher in a new century of baseball, rose on the southern portion of the site, leaving the northern foundation untouched—a scar on the urban landscape. This remnant area was envisioned as the "Ballpark Village" development, a vibrant hub of entertainment, dining, and hospitality. Yet, as the new Busch Stadium opened in 2006, the ambitious development stalled, leaving a barren expanse where vitality had been promised. The first phase of "Ballpark Village" did not get underway until 2014, nearly eight years later.

In 2009, my brother Dan Pieri proposed an interim solution to breathe life into this dormant site. He called his idea "Rendezvous Park," an imaginative installation that would weave the rich tapestry of St. Louis baseball into the architectural remnants of Old Busch Stadium. The concept was as much about honoring the past as it was about envisioning the future.
The design embraced the arc of the old stadium’s Northern foundation, using it as the backbone of a narrative journey through St. Louis baseball history. This arc would become an exhibition arcade, where the stories of the St. Louis Browns, the glory days of the 1960s Cardinals, and the era of Busch Memorial Stadium came alive. The outer face of the arcade’s outfield wall featured curated exhibits, while a repetitive modular tensile membrane canopy arched overhead. The form of the tensile canopy evoked the iconic arched concrete overhang of Busch Memorial Stadium, itself a homage to Eero Saarinen’s Gateway Arch—a layered dialogue between architecture and memory.

Exhibition Arcade Walk
Beyond the arcade lay the "Field of Dreams," a sculpture park shaped like a baseball diamond. Here, bronze statues of St. Louis legends such as Rogers Hornsby, Mickey Mantle, and Dizzy Dean took to the field, evoking a timeless game frozen in motion. This field was more than an artistic gesture; it was an invitation to visitors to walk among the legends, connecting with the soul of Baseball.

The Field of Dreams
Tree-lined pathways extended from Rendezvous Park to the new Busch Stadium, offering more than a mere connection between two points. These pathways acted as transitional spaces, gently guiding fans and visitors into the world of St. Louis baseball history. Shaded by a canopy of trees, they provided a cool, serene environment that softens the harsh urban surroundings. The pathways invited visitors to leave behind the ordinary clamor of the city and enter a space steeped in memory and anticipation. As fans walked these paths, they would encounter glimpses of the past through subtle design cues and curated elements, deepening their appreciation for the storied legacy of St. Louis baseball. The paths symbolized both a physical and emotional journey, bridging the old and the new, while anchoring the stadium to its surrounding community.

Rendezvous Park was conceived as a temporary solution to fill an urban void, yet its ambitions were anything but modest. It sought to transform an abandoned site into a living celebration of St. Louis baseball, connecting Downtown to the new Stadium by interweaving the legacy of Old Busch Stadium with the aspirations of a new era. Though it was never realized, the project remains a poignant example of how architecture can tell stories, bridge generations, and reimagine spaces to honor the past while inspiring the future.
